Introduction

One of Indian cinema’s rare careers built from the graphic up — from lettering, to visual effects, to production.

Soundarya Rajinikanth is an Indian graphic designer, film producer and director who works principally in Tamil cinema. She entered the industry in 1999 as a designer, sketching the title for Padayappa, and spent the following decade shaping the way a generation of Tamil films introduced themselves on screen.

In 2005 she founded Ocher Studios, a visual-effects and pre-production house in Chennai; three years later it entered an agreement with Warner Bros. Entertainment to produce and distribute Tamil films. Her production debut, Goa, followed in 2010.

Her directorial debut, Kochadaiiyaan (2014), was India’s first photorealistic motion-capture feature — and made her the first woman to direct her father, Rajinikanth, in a feature film. She has since directed Velaiilla Pattadhari 2 (2017) and built three production companies, alongside a voice-based technology platform.

Identity

Born 20 September 1984
Chennai, India

A designer who learned cinema from the inside out.

Soundarya studied graphic design at Central TAFE in Perth and took a degree in multimedia from Edith Cowan University in Australia, before returning to Chennai and joining the film industry as a designer rather than a performer.

That sequence matters. Every subsequent step — a visual-effects studio, an animated feature, a motion-capture production, a production company, a technology platform — has been an extension of the same instinct: to control how a story looks, and how it reaches an audience.

Full biography

The design years

Before the credits rolled, somebody had to draw them.

Between 1999 and 2007 Soundarya designed titles, sketches and graphics for a run of Tamil films — work that is rarely credited on a poster but sets the tone of everything that follows it. In 2005 she formalised the practice by founding Ocher Studios, taking on visual effects and pre-production for features.

Films Soundarya Rajinikanth worked on as graphic designer: Padayappa, Baba, Chandramukhi, Anbe Aaruyire, Sivakasi, Majaa, Sandakozhi, Chennai 600028, Sivaji and Kochadaiiyaan.

01

Title design

Hand-drawn and typographic title sequences, beginning with the title sketch for Padayappa in 1999 and the title sequence for Baba in 2002.

02

Film graphics

Graphic design across Chandramukhi, Anbe Aaruyire, Sivakasi, Majaa and Sandakozhi in 2005, then Chennai 600028 and Sivaji in 2007.

03

Visual effects

Ocher Studios, founded in 2005, opened with Chandramukhi and grew into a visual-effects and pre-production house working across Tamil features.

04

Performance capture

Kochadaiiyaan took the practice to its furthest point: performance capture at Pinewood Studios in London, with animation completed across the United States, Hong Kong and China.

Inside the design practice

Film & production

From the drawing board to the producer’s chair.

Soundarya produced her first feature, Goa, in 2010 under Ocher Picture Productions. Four years later she directed Kochadaiiyaan — a film released in six languages, scored by A. R. Rahman, and built on performance capture technology that had never been attempted at that scale in India.

In 2017 she directed Velaiilla Pattadhari 2, writing the screenplay from a story by Dhanush and bringing Kajol back to Tamil cinema after twenty years. She founded May6 Entertainment in 2018, moved into streaming as a creative producer, and launched Zion Films in 2025.

Recognition

2014

NDTV Indian of the Year

Honoured for Technical Innovation in Film, for bringing India its first photorealistic motion-capture feature with Kochadaiiyaan.

Recognition earned in a technical category — which is exactly the point.

Kochadaiiyaan divided critics on its animation, and the film did not recover its budget. What is not in dispute is what it attempted: performance capture at Pinewood Studios, a triple role for Rajinikanth, a score by A. R. Rahman, and a simultaneous release across six languages.

It also made Soundarya the first woman to direct her father in a feature film — a distinction that sits alongside the studio partnership Ocher signed with Warner Bros. in 2008 as evidence of a career spent widening what an Indian production can be built from.
