Soundarya Rajinikanth —
a designer who arrived at cinema through its letters.

Soundarya Rajinikanth was born on 20 September 1984 in Madras — now Chennai. She attended Ashram Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Velachery, in the south of the city.

For higher education she went to Australia, studying graphic design at Central TAFE in Perth before taking a degree in multimedia from Edith Cowan University. It is an unusual grounding for someone who would go on to direct feature films: her formal training was in composition, typography, image-making and the software that assembles them, not in performance or screenwriting.

That training explains a good deal about the shape of the career that followed. She returned to Chennai and entered the film industry through its design department — the part of production that decides how a film looks before a frame of it is shot.

Her first screen credit came in 1999, with the title sketch for Padayappa. In 2002 she designed the title sequence for Baba. Both were films starring her father, and both were opportunities to work at the point where a film’s identity is set: its name, rendered.

2005 was the busiest year of this period. She worked as graphic designer on Chandramukhi, Anbe Aaruyire, Sivakasi, Majaa and Sandakozhi. In 2007 she designed the title sequence for Sivaji and worked on Chennai 600028.

Across eight years and ten films she built a body of work in a discipline that rarely gets its own column in a review — and, in the process, learned how a Tamil production is actually assembled.

In 2005 Soundarya founded Ocher Studios in Chennai as a visual-effects and pre-production house. Its first project was Chandramukhi. By 2008 it employed a team of around eighty and specialised in visual effects and pre-production services for features.

That year Ocher Studios signed an agreement with Warner Bros. Entertainment to partner on producing and distributing Tamil films — at the time an unusual arrangement between a Hollywood studio and a young Chennai-based house.

Ocher also developed Sultan: The Warrior, a 3D animated feature with Rajinikanth voicing the lead, in co-production with Adlabs Films. A teaser was released and pre-production advanced, but the film was ultimately shelved. It is part of the record: an ambitious animation project attempted in India well before the infrastructure for one existed.

Her debut as a producer came in 2010 with Goa, made under Ocher Picture Productions, the production banner she founded and owns.

Four years later she directed Kochadaiiyaan, released on 23 May 2014. It was India’s first photorealistic motion-capture film: performance capture was carried out at Pinewood Studios in London, with animation completed across the United States, Hong Kong and China. Rajinikanth played a triple role; Deepika Padukone made her Tamil debut; A. R. Rahman composed the score, K. S. Ravikumar wrote the screenplay and Resul Pookutty handled sound design. It was released simultaneously in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi and Punjabi.

Directing it made her the first woman to direct her father in a feature film. She positioned the project as a tribute to the centenary of Indian cinema. Critics divided sharply over the quality of the animation and the film did not recover its budget — but the technical ambition was recognised at the NDTV Indian of the Year awards, where she was honoured for Technical Innovation in Film.

In 2017 Soundarya directed Velaiilla Pattadhari 2, writing the screenplay from a story by Dhanush. Where Kochadaiiyaan had been a technology project, VIP 2 was a mainstream live-action sequel — produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu’s V Creations and Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films.

The film brought Kajol back to Tamil cinema after a twenty-year absence, in her first Tamil role since Minsara Kanavu in 1997, and also featured Amala Paul, Samuthirakani, Saranya Ponvannan and Vivek. Sean Roldan scored it, with Anirudh Ravichander’s original theme retained; Sameer Thahir shot it. It opened in Tamil on 11 August 2017, and in Hindi and Telugu later that month.

A third directorial project, Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam, entered pre-production in 2016 with Dhanush, Kajal Aggarwal and Manjima Mohan attached, but was dropped; the title was later revived by other filmmakers without her involvement.

On 3 September 2018 Soundarya established May6 Entertainment, a Chennai-based film and television content company working across pre-production, production and post-production, with a stated ambition to make work that travels beyond its region.

In March 2021 she set up Hoote Global Technologies, and that October her father launched Hoote — a voice-based social platform built around sixty-second voice notes, announced as the first voice-based social network launched from India and planned for fifteen Indian and ten international languages. The idea began with a voice note her father sent her while he was shooting Annaatthe; the name comes from the call of the owl, a symbol of wisdom.

In March 2024 May6 Entertainment moved into streaming with Gangs — Kuruthi Punal, a 1970s-set period action drama for Prime Video directed by Noah, with Soundarya as creative producer. In 2025 she founded Zion Films, under which With Love went into production in Chennai that November.

Read as a sequence, the career has an internal logic. Title design gave her authorship over a film’s first impression. A visual-effects studio gave her the pipeline that produced it. A production company gave her the decision about which films got made at all. A technology platform extended the same instinct past cinema entirely.

The through-line is control of the medium rather than a preference for any single role. It is why the same person is credited as graphic designer and director on the same film — Kochadaiiyaan carries both credits — and why her production company describes its work in three stages: pre-production, production, and a post-production process it characterises as finishing a film frame by frame.

It is also why the projects that did not work are as characteristic as the ones that did. Sultan: The Warrior and Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam were both abandoned. Kochadaiiyaan was a commercial disappointment. Each was an attempt at something the industry was not yet set up to make.

Soundarya is the younger daughter of the actor Rajinikanth and Latha Rajinikanth. Her elder sister, Aishwarya Rajinikanth, is also a filmmaker.

She married the actor and businessman Vishagan Vanangamudi on 11 February 2019 at The Leela Palace in Chennai. The family lives in Chennai.
